Woman Who Received $50,000 from Drake in “God’s Plan” Video Graduates with Her Master’s Degree

Music videos don’t get much attention anymore. But you might remember Drake’s 2018 video for his song “God’s Plan,” in which he gives away almost $1 million.

At about the 1:11 mark, Drake hands a $50,000 cheque to University of Miami student Destiny James. Not only did James go on to graduate from UM in 2019, she now has her master’s degree in Public Health. She completed it at the University of North Carolina earlier this year.

“Mama, I mastered it. Daddy, I did it,” she announced on Instagram.

Drake couldn’t have been prouder. The rapper follows James on Instagram, and was quick to respond to the news of her master’s. “LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DES,” he commented, to which she responded “@champagnepapi [two blue heart emojis] THANK YOUUUU!!”

James never applied for the scholarship that she received from Drake, but did try to obtain other forms of financial aid when she was an undergrad student.

In 2018, James wrote in a post on Instagram that her essay and story made it to another department at the University of Miami, and that she received a call from the assistant vice president of university advancement, who wanted to feature her in a video to motivate alumni to donate.

When James arrived at the video shoot, she saw Drake, who then handed her the giant cheque. James talked about the support in an Instagram post. “Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I’ve worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition. @champagnepapi THANK YOU SO MUCH!! You don’t understand what this means to me! I would’ve never imagined this happening to me. I’m just a girl from Denmark, SC that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody, and for you to see my hard work means the world.”

In 2019, James told the University of Miami News and Events “Thanks to Drake, I’m probably stressing about classes and work, but I’m not stressing about tuition.”
